What's it about?

We are presented with many choices in life, you and I…

Often it is hard to distinguish the right from the wrong. The good from the bad, the red from the black. Charlie is no exception.

He never knew that death could be a kindness, but neither do most ten-year-old boys.

Step into a world of magic, adventure and danger in this gripping tale of courage and sacrifice. When Charlie trades his life of luxury for adventure, he discovers an enchanted world slipping into chaos. Confronted by a cruel dictatorship ruling over the enchanted Divine realm, he must team up with a time-traveling criminal, The Commodore, and a brave rebel faction, The Galdihar Rebellion, to stop the plans of the malevolent Celestial Order.

Will they be able to save the innocent and prevent the domination of the four planes?

Discover the answer in this captivating novel that will leave you on the edge of your seat until the very end.

I deviated from my norm to read what seems to be time-travel/fantasy, and was surprised at my immediate engagement. I usually read a novel straight through but found myself rereading parts and needing to think about the characters’ names, the time changes, Charlie’s world, and how enticing it is to want to be inside a “globe” (?). This is an extremely adventurous, exciting, scary tale--socio-politico-religious-economic situations true to centuries past as well as present-day historical events--an allegory akin to Pilgrim’s Progress, though Sills is much more readable and fantastical. At the beginning of some chapters, the author provides profound food for thought. I found myself ruminating as I feasted on his declarations and questions. “Human life is one of the most commonly spent commodities….What if the soldiers lay down their arms and simply said no….What if?” This is an adventure of pondering; I have not yet reached a viable conclusion.

Lose yourself, find yourself, in this addictive debut novel

I’ve decided to read one book a week this year, The Commodore and the Matterless Master was my fiction break from great but serious business books. I’ve never read a novel, but this one stood out as a debut novel. A first first! The Commodore and the Matterless Martyr had me fully engaged from the first to the last page. The main characters The Commodore and Charlie, as well as the antagonists of the Celestial Order are described through vivid descriptive writing that left me feeling like I was in their struggles, in their time - their worlds. This is unbelievably good writing, I was late for many things as I got immersed and blurred my own sense of time. If you like a subplot you’ll be pleased to hear that is rich in detail too, with a cast of characters and worlds. Twist, turn, strategy, tactic, the hero, the mentor are all present and very correct. Spoiler alert: it will end with you craving the next instalment.

I bought this book as I have been meaning to find something to replace the hours of mind numbing screen time we have come to see as normal these days, I don’t think I could of started reading with a better book ! Within the first few pages I already have images of each character in my head and I am always looking forward to getting home from work and turning the next page so I would say a massive success ! Still waiting to see how far little Charlie gets on his adventures and looking forward to a sequel or anything else along these lines by this author.
